Blue Ridge Timberwrights partnered with the famed New Jersey-based Architectural Firm Michael Graves & Associates and Washington DC-based Hitt Contracting to construct the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, Virginia.
Six timber structures were created for the museum, which was constructed to display 5 collections of artifacts from the Shenandoah Valley area.
“It’s a great honor to be asked to work with such an accomplished firm,” stated Blue Ridge president Sandy Bennett. “We especially appreciate that the material used will be select forest salvaged Douglas Fir. This timber has been cut from trees that were killed by fire and other causes but still remains premium quality wood. It is in keeping with our goal to use reclaimed or salvage timber in some of our projects which limits the number of living trees cut for our needs.”
Most of the structures being created for the museum project are more akin to timber sculptures which will be used as display galleries within the museum. Two are “barn-like” in nature, each about 7,500 square feet in size. One is octagonal in shape and will serve as an orientation gallery.
