The Greenbrier Chapel
The Greenbrier Chapel is a 12,000-square-foot timber frame enclosed in Structural Insulated Panels. This unique structure is a combination of classic design and modern engineering. The timber frame consists of nearly 800 Douglas Fir timbers. The largest pieces were 12-inch by 12-inch by 35-foot pillars that formed the perimeter of the chapel’s sanctuary. While traditional mortise and tenon joinery were employed, massive steel hubs were also hidden in the trusses. Other features include custom stained-glass windows and wooden, clapboard siding; a standing-seam copper roof; and a copper-sheathed steeple whose tip will stand about 100 feet from the ground. Inside, rows of pews and curving wrought-iron railings feature the signature curly scripted “G” known throughout the resort. Elegant chandeliers provide lighting for the sanctuary. The balcony’s ceiling was painted in “Haint Blue,” a mainstay of the Greenbrier’s decorative palette.
Nestled on The Greenbrier’s North Lawn, The Greenbrier Chapel was designed to blend in with the historic structures and natural landscape surrounding it. Mr. Justice, the owner, personally selected the site for The Chapel after a centuries-old oak tree inexplicably passed away. He decided that from this loss would come new life with the addition of The Greenbrier Chapel. The two wooden crosses found inside The Chapel have been carved from this historic oak tree. The stump remains with a brass plaque commemorating his decision.
The construction of the chapel was a monumental feat unto itself. Groundbreaking and excavation started in the month of April. As many trades worked in very close proximity to meet the looming deadline, progress was made in leaps and bounds every day. Everyone knew that in September, just six short months later, the first wedding ceremony had already been scheduled for the owner’s daughter.
