Chateau Morrisette Winery

This 40,000 square foot, one million cubic foot, wine production, wine tasting, and the retail facility is believed to be the largest timber frame structure ever built from reclaimed materials. In addition, it may also be the largest timber frame structure built in America since the 19th century. In any event, it is indeed a large timber frame structure, as it requires over 1,200 individual timbers.

Chateau Morrisette Winery wanted a structure that would blend with its surroundings along the Blue Ridge Parkway and provide the additional space needed to expand its winery operation. Along with their architect, Bruce G. Sanders, they decided to build a timber frame structure. The high ceilings throughout and the huge timbers provide a visual feeling of great strength, and the timber frame structure, itself, is reminiscent of old European architecture.

The timbers used were reclaimed Douglas Fir. Most of which were salvaged from the St. Lawrence Seaway.
